  • The Canadian Pacific's famous Morant's Curve in the Canadian Rockies as seen on a winter's morning. Located just east of Lake Louise in Banff National Park, this spot is popular with train spotters who come to see the CPR freight trains or the occasional passenger train on the S-curve with the Bow River and Mount Temple and other mountains in the distance. I have come here a few times first thing in the morning, while still dark outside to set-up for the sunrise and hopefully catch a train travelling eastbound. But with no luck with regard to the trains.

  • A panoramic view of Lac Monroe and Petit Lac Monroe taken from the lookout overlooking these two lakes in the Parc national du Mont-Tremblant. Although things look calm in the image, at the lookout itself the winds were quite brisk to the point where I had to take extra measures to stabilize the tripod from vibration. 30 metres back into the woods, there was no trace of wind.

  • This colour image was captured in February 2014 after a snowfall. I spent a large part of the day wandering around the Rouge River valley on this day, and with no winds to speak of, the trees remained snow covered throughout my time outdoors. This is an HDR processed image of 7 exposures.

  • Lots going on in this photograph. We have star trails, a meteor, an aircarft and northern lights captured in this image. During this capture (which is actually of a couple of merged images as evidenced by the gap in the star trails) I saw, to the east, a vertical shaft of light above the horizon, which I thought were headlights of a vehicle on a distant road. It took a while for me to realize that these "headlights" did not really move, and that there was no roadway to the east. It was then that I, the amateur astronomer, figured out that the shaft of light was actually the northern lights, confirmed by a 30 second exposure taken in that direction. And of course that light show ended pretty much immediately thereafter.

  • On May 14, 1914, wet natural gas sprayed out of the well bore at the Calgary Petroleum Products No. 1 Well (more commonly known as the Dingman #1 Discovery Well). This discovery led to the development of the Province's first natural gas processing plant. The Turner Valley Gas Plant operated for nearly 70 years, closing in 1985. It is now a Provincial Historic Site.
